Frank Stella is one of the most famous artists, with an infamous quote to his credit. The quote goes like this, “Painting is a flat surface with paint on it.” Born in pre WWII period, on May 12, 1936 in Malden, Massachusetts, Stella is a modern American artist, much in the mould of John Pollack. He is quintessentially a commercial artist at heart, which is a common trait of almost all the modernist American artists. A printmaker, an artist, a sculptor, and a designer of sets, all rolled into one, Stella is a living icon, whose works share a large chunk of American cultural space.
Frank started achieving fame and recognition with his series of Black Paintings, which were black and white pinstripes on unpainted canvas. Stella’s “Die Fahne Hoch,” which is one of these series, is notorious for its double meaning slogan. These paintings were art that the public was not accustomed to. Frank’s “representational” art, which was dominant even in the abstract movements, gave way to the ‘flat” pattern art. He rode on the crest of this new wave. His “Protractor” series were a step further in this “flat” expression of patterns, where colors entered the landscape. These paintings were a series of circles, concentric semi-circles, and right angles, arranged in a skewed fashion, almost tumbling over each other. These series were in fact the start of Frank’s “minimalist” mini-movement, where he tried using lesser colors to achieve a more striking effect.
However, as the 50s gave way to the 60s, Stella reinvented himself as a print maker and invented Offset Lithography. Often, he produced acclaimed prints with master Japanese printmakers. His printmaking and a dabble in the Vaudeville (designing sets), made him move away from his minimal art, while finding a rich legacy of even more exuberant expression. He started experimenting with wood, aluminum, plastic, and with that, his spaces and curves became three-dimensional. Often Stella was called on to do iconic statues, as the one that stands in the front of National Gallery, Washington. Sometimes though, he failed to get the statues off the ground as in Dresden.
Stella has also been an architect cum designer for many Galleries, where his sense of abstract space has made these buildings stand out and scream their art aloud. He continues to work actively, even at this ripe old age, almost proving the title of the “modern renaissance” artist, rather much in the mould of the renaissance artists, who were engineers and artists at the same time.
