What are the long&many legged bugs with worm-type body? Legs are blk/white stripe. Move low along rug/floor.?
Two or three of these bugs showed up last year. This year I have found up to 10. They aren’t fast because the spiders must get them. After wacking it with a fly swatter it disintegrates into dust. VERY ugly. When you smack a live one, the legs keep moving after they are separated from the body. It looks a bit like a really long legged centipede except not as many legs, they seem to have knees as it is raised off the ground, they are longer and the main worm body (med. brown in colour) is bigger. Need to know where they come from and how to keep them out of the house. Is there a nest somewhere? Are they native to the Toronto area?
Sounds like it might be a house centipede (Scutigera). These critters are related to the more common garden centipede found across North America, but are shorter in body with longer, almost thread-like legs.

The house centipede was originally from Europe, but has been introduced in North America. It seems to be becoming more common recently, and is expanding its range.
They prefer areas that are damp and warm, like bathrooms, moist closets, cellars, crawl spaces and firewood piles. Drying and cleaning those areas can help keep their numbers down.
Like spiders, centipedes are predators, and feed on things like flies, moths, bedbugs, crickets, silverfish, earwigs and cockroaches, so their presence in your house might not be such a bad thing. If you can tolerate their admittedly super-creepiness (I’m an entomologist, and even I find them kinda creepy) they’re actually beneficial to have in the house.
