A comedy writer named Buddy Sheffield claims that he was the one who originally came up with the idea for a Hannah Montana style series. However, he never got compensated by Disney. In the lawsuit, Sheffield claims that in the script he handed to Disney in 2001 he had the idea of a TV series under the name of “Rock and Roland”. The plot was similar to the one in Hannah Montana; where a junior student lived a secret double life, both as a normal student and a pop-rock star.
The lawsuit has been initiated for breach of contract, breach of confidence, unfair competition and unjust enrichment. The writer, who also wrote In Living Color and The Smothers Brothers Show claims compensation from the profit created by the popular Disney TV series, Hannah Montana.
Initially, Disney passed on the idea and was in a ‘postponed’ status in which Buddy Sheffield was to receive an acknowledgement if and when the script will be put forward. The Disney executives liked the idea of a Hannah Montana style tv series and was asked to write a few sample scenes. After the scenes were written, Sheffield didn’t hear anything from them. Five years later, in 2006 the television series has started filming and Buddy Sheffield’s name was nowhere to be seen.
This is the second lawsuit Disney is involved in related to its popular television series, Hannah Montana. The second one has been filed more recently, when subscribers of Miley Cyrus World didn’t get the tickets their membership to the website promises. The membership isn’t cheap either, as it can be as much as $12 per month.
The reason for the above shortage is that the membership numbers vastly exceeded the actual number of tickets available. Due to the very successful, even magical marketing by Disney this year, the site has become very popular amongst young juniors, mostly 10-14 years old. It is true that the tickets were available for purchase before being released to other companies for non-members, but even so they weren’t enough. In fact, at the San Diego Hannah Montana concert, 90% of the participants were members of the Miley Cyrus World website.
