One essential element for good health is clean water and this is perhaps the most important thing you can provide for your birds. They will need an abundance of water when they are laying.
During hot weather you should try to change the water at least every day and preferably twice. If you notice it becoming soiled with feces then you should change the water again. To an extent you can reduce this problem by lifting water containers above floor level.
You can add water-soluble vitamins and minerals and supplements to their drinking water. This is relatively inexpensive to do and can promote good health.
When feeding birds, you can use one of the many good branded product feeds that are available today. These are suitable throughout all stages of their life. While the birds are very young, you can be quite liberal with their feed however as the birds get a bit older you should limit their consumption. Take care when feeding scraps from your kitchen to the birds as although they will love it it should not be at the expense of their regular food which contains the minerals and vitamins that they need. Do not give spices and salts to the birds.
Bear in mind also that if you go away on holidays, you will need some assistance from family friends or neighbours to come round each morning to feed and water your chickens. The burden of this task can sometimes be alleviated with the promise of fresh eggs.
